Photographic negatives, 1949-1974, bulk 1949-1974.

The SIO Photographic Laboratory was established in 1949 to provide photographic services to the SIO community. Photographers photographed instruments, ships, events, people and campus scenes at the request of SIO Offices. The office that placed the order was charged for prints. Negatives remained in the central file at the SIO Photographic Laboratory. The negative file consists mainly of black and white 4x5 negatives, although the collection includes some color negatives and negatives in other sizes. The SIO Photographic Laboratory sequentially numbered each negative. A log of photographs, which includes the number, date, ordering office, and brief description was kept at the SIO Photographic Laboratory. Beginning in 1958, the SIO Photographic Laboratory took photographs of the campus of the University of California, San Diego. Many of these images were ordered by Physical Plant as a record of the construction of campus buildings, but the UCSD images also include photographs of inaugurations of chancellors and other campus events. This collection consists of some 12,000 original negatives. The collection includes images of instruments and vessels, aerial photographs of the SIO and UCSD campuses and surrounding areas, images of marine life, photos of buildings, campus scenes and events, portraits of staff, negatives of line drawings and other illustrations for scientific manuscripts, and photographs of expeditions and work at sea. SIO Archives holds negatives dated 1949-1974. Negatives dated after 1974 remain at the SIO Photographic Laboratory.
